an MDX query string and get a result set? Maybe there is
one that is installed with AS and I am just missing it.

Yes, the MDX sample application was exactly what I was
looking for. It was sitting right under my nose, and I
was just not seeing it. I had remembered reading about it
in the BOL and other books, but when I needed it, I just
couldn't remember where it was.
